Landscape Timbers

I have a garden area that is in need of something to keep the dirt from flowing into the yard. We have used rocks and 2 x 8's to make some of the beds, but we thought today of using the 8' landscaping timbers with the rounded edges to do this one. I figured it up and with some extra 35 would be a good number, the price at Lowe's in Troy was $2/ board more than Huber Heights, so I called Menard's and they would match Huber Heights. Menard's it is, I paid for them and went around back to start loading. A young man on a fork lift drove up and asked me if he could help, I told him the goal was to get 35 of these timbers in and close the hatch. He started putting them on top of mine, as we went along he kept counting them, he said we have 11 more to go, I think we are going to make it. I put the last one in, he counted them again and then the test, I closed the hatch, a chuckle came out of his mouth as he said, that is better than a truck. I drove out and opened the hatch so the security guard could count them, he said this is better than a truck because if it starts to rain your lumber doesn't get wet. I asked if I could take a picture for my blog and he was OK with it.

A Full Trunk + 1

I picked up a cabinet today at Franklin that fit in the back nicely, that for most people would be enough. Problem, I had received a $10 off coupon if I spent $50 at Lowe's and it expired on the 12th of February. My original plan was to stop on my way home and pick up 2x4x 8 feet long, but with the dresser in the back, I wasn't sure if I could. As I am driving the 40 miles home, I kept looking in the back and thought there might be enough room if I put some boards under the cabinet and up along the side. Still not sure, I decided as I drove past Lowe's that if it was the boards outside by the drywall and I could back up close to them, I would try it. I pulled into Lowe's and no one was around the drywall and yes the boards were outside, so I backed up and went inside. I bought 30, 2x4's and started by putting them under the cabinet, I could go 3 high and 8 boards wide, I only had to put 6 boards along the side. A couple gentlemen passing said it looked like to much work and then laughed when they saw the cabinet inside. I tide the back end down and drove home, only about 18" stuck out the back.

Prius - Grill Master

Today we went to Lowe's to look at the deep discounted grills before they call them the 2010 models and double the price. I had been looking at a 4 burner with a burner/ grill on the side, it has dropped almost in half since this summer. I asked the salesperson if they had one in a box and he said that was the last one, so I told him I would take it and he was going to have to remove the side tables so it would fit in the Prius. He finally found enough tools to take of the side without a burner in it, so I told him we could try to put it in the car without taking the other side off. We unloaded everything that was loose, tried to put it on its side, to high with the other table still on, turned it onto its back and was able to slide it in to just the top and side table wouldn't go in. He went and got me some twine to tie the lids closed, tied the hatch down close to the grill and home we went. Again the Prius has stood up to the challenge.

Freezing Prius

We decided it was time to get a freezer, so I got busy to locate one at a good price. I found a couple that were in our price range, and thought that I would borrow my dads truck to haul it home. We went over to Lowe's and checked them out in the Prius, I had measured the hatch opening before we departed from the house. After looking the two over I asked the salesperson for a tape measure, the 7.0 cubic ft. freezer was perfect with it not in the box. We went on to purchase it, I again asked if I could borrow the measuring tape, the freezer in the box would fit in the hatch. So I told them not to take it out of the box. The salesperson put it on a cart and took it to the front registers, I thanked him and said that I would take it from here, he replied I will help you load it. So I went and got the car, opened up the hatch, flipped the back seats down and me on one side and the Lowe's salesperson on the other loaded into the Prius and I closed the hatch. The sale person stepped back and with a smile on his face said, I wouldn't have believed it if I wasn't here. He chucked as he pushed the cart back into the Lowe's. I am so glad that I didn't take it out of the box because it made a wonderful play house for the neighbor kids to play with.

Prius is it a Car or Truck

I had a gift card for Lowe's that if I spent $50 dollars I got $10 off, after thinking about it I decided to get 2 x 4 - 8 feet long to work on building walls in the basement. In order to turn my Prius into a truck I first drop the back seats down, take one of the back seat floor mats and flip it upside down on the center console and you have a truck that will haul a 8 foot board with the hatch closed.
I went in and started loading the boards onto the cart, I got to the $50 dollars and decided that since I had $60 bucks in my wallet to go ahead and get more boards. I go to the register with 34 boards, paid for them and proceeded outside to a downpour. I ran out and drove the car under the cover, wheeled the cart over and started loading boards. I filled up the console area and my cart was still over half full, I decided to lower the passenger seat backwards and start stacking them across it. The cart got empty and the Prius still had enough room for about a dozen more boards, I threw in the 5 gallon bucket up drywall joint compound, bag of small stuff. As I slowly closed the hatch, I kept watching to make sure the glass wasn't going to hit the boards and break until it was completely closed and yes it closed. I started to grab the cart to push it away and an applause started by the door, several people watched me load those boards into the car and couldn't believe they all fit, I just smiled and said that it surprised me to and that car is a 50mpg truck. I guy that owned a pickup said that he could hall more boards than the car, but he would have to buy a tarp to keep them dry. We all laughed and went home.
